The field of crop products is no longer restricted to traditional food and feed applications. Rather than relying on fossil fuel-based raw materials, the chemical industry is looking more and more to vegetable oils as starting points and intermediates.

Organic Acids
Starting from cereal-based sugars, and using fermentation processes for their manufacture, citric acid and citrates, lactic acid and lactates,

and gluconic acid are widely used for pH control, as sequestering agents and as chemical and pharmaceutical intermediates. Our high L(+) lactic acid may be used as an intermediate in stereo-specific isomer production.

Polyols
Looking for polyols? Consider our maize-derived sorbitol and high-purity glycerol (made from our biodiesel production).

Lecithins
Lecithin’s role in leather manufacturing is mainly to soften the leather’s surface. It acts as a penetrant and lubricant to assist the absorption of oils into the leather to improve softness and suppleness.

Cotton Linter Pulp
Cotton linter pulp from our cottonseed processing is used to make cellulose ethers as well as in nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate and cellulose viscose production.
Solvent
ADM is a leading producer of ethyl lactate, a solvent that effectively softens plastics to allow their easy removal from a surface. We make it starting from our in-house ethanol and lactic acid, both of which are derived from maize. Therefore it is made from renewable resources and is biodegradable. For these reasons, there is growing interest in its use, from paint stripping to cleaning printed circuit boards in the electronics industry.
