Lactic Acid
ADM’s fermentation plant, making lactic acid from maize, consistently produces a very pure product of very high L(+) isomeric purity. ADM lactic acid is the ideal raw material for polymerisation to polylactic acid (PLA), one of today’s new generation of biodegradable plastics. PLA is used to make anything from fibres to clear cold-drink beakers to food packaging trays, and after use it rapidly degrades to water and carbon dioxide.
Solvent
From our lactic production, ADM offers ethyl lactate, a solvent which dissolves many plastics and can soften the plastic for removal from a surface. Use of such products improves operator safety and lessens exposure to toxic substances.

Release Agents & Plasticisers
ADM’s monoglycerides are used as internal release agents (reducing the sticking of foods in plastic containers), acting as plasticisers (reducing the melting temperature of the polymer and increasing the compatibility between hydrophobic and hydrophilic resins), as an ageing modifier in extruded foam and as an anti-fog agent in shrink-wrap.
